In Ashoka’s definition, Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative, system changing solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. Ashoka offers a life-time Fellowship program for individual Social Entrepreneurs. The Fellowship represents a great opportunity to spread the work and impact of these individuals as well as support them to scale up and grow. The Fellows are at the center of inspiration and ideas that we offer to the wider world. Ashoka invests in these social entrepreneurs not only because they are transforming their fields and imparting communities but also because they are role models, opening opportunities for others to engage in changemaking.

Maintaining a rigorous selection process of Social Entrepreneurs for our Fellowship and universally applied standards is critical to Ashoka, as it ensures that we elect into the Fellowship only the most innovative leading social entrepreneurs with the greatest probability of achieving transformational social impact and system change.

The search and selection process involves five stages culminating in a selection panel. Since its inception in 2003, Ashoka Arab World has carried out 21 regional selection panel for Arab social entrepreneurs and elected 82 Fellows in 9 Arab countries. Selection panels are held twice per year in Spring and Fall. Below are the statistics for the latest May 2014 regional selection panel for Ashoka Fellows:

  • Received Nominations through Ashoka’s nominations network = 55
  • Candidates identified through the search and selection process conducted by Ashoka’s venture team = 18
  • Total Number of candidates invited to apply =72
  • Finalists chosen to go through the Ashoka Spring Selection Panel = 6

Special thanks to our panelists who voluntarily dedicate their time and effort to help Ashoka identify, elect and showcase Arab leading Social Entrepreneurs.
